White Balance

What color is white?

Film had a color cast and thus a white balance...Now we can change it on the fly.

You can make adjustments for the lighting conditions. Most cameras have white balance settings for shooting under fluorescent bulbs vs. incandescent vs. outdoor sunny skies etc. This is like having an infinite number of film types available.

It is important to remember that the setting moves the colors toward neutral, thus SHADE (a cool light) will make the image warmer and TUNGSTEN (a warm light) will make the image cooler. This control is meant to be used to correct color casts to a neutral state.

Think of a gradient that goes from very cool blue on one end to warm yellow on the other. Neutral will be near the center.

***If you set the WB control to Flash ( a very neutral setting ) the camera will record the real light without shifting it. This is my normal setting.

JPEG vs. RAW: JPGs can only be adjusted in post processing so far before they start to show degradation. RAW images can be set to any White Balance setting without fear.

When shooting:

Why bother if you shoot RAW?

If Shade light is cool why is the picture warm?

What would be your normal?
